Ticket FAQs

Do I need to book in advance?

For standard running days, train tickets can be purchased on the day at the booking office — no advance booking required. Some special events and dining experiences have limited capacity and may require advance booking. Always check the event listing.

Why do prices vary between events?

Our railway is volunteer-run and ticket prices reflect the cost of operating each specific event — including locomotive preparation, fuel, crew and any special guest engines. Flagship events such as the Flying Scotsman require significantly higher operating costs.

When does the £1 child fare apply?

The £1 child return fare is offered on selected family-friendly events, typically during school half-terms and bank holidays. It is not available on every open day — the event page will clearly state if this fare applies.

How can I pay?

Train tickets and parking are payable at the booking office on arrival. We accept cash and card. Some advance-booking events may require online payment when booking.

Is there a concession rate?

Concession and family ticket prices vary by event. Check the individual event listing for the full price breakdown including any senior, concession or family ticket options available on that date.

Are tickets refundable?

We reserve the right to change times and availability without notice. If an event is cancelled by us, we will endeavour to offer a refund or transfer. Please contact us directly if you have a booking query.
