Major New Facility Nears Completion

A major milestone for the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) — our brand new locomotive servicing facility is rapidly nearing completion, with concrete now being poured around the inspection pit.

This isn't just an upgrade — it's a transformative step forward for the railway. The new pit is a state-of-the-art installation, equipped with air, water, and power, and designed to accommodate even the largest main line steam locomotives. Combined with a fully revamped and rewired running shed, the facility provides crews with the safe, level, and professional working environment needed to maintain and prepare locomotives to the highest standard.

This project has been made possible thanks to the incredible support of our donors and supporters — and we're proud that their contribution will be permanently recognised with commemorative bricks in the near future.

And what better way to put this new facility to the test… In May 2026, we will welcome two giants of British steam — the world-famous Flying Scotsman and the 100mph LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado — for what promises to be an unforgettable and historic visit.
